What is the ECDL?
The ECDL - EUROPEAN COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE -
is an internationally-recognized standard of competence,
a widely acceptable certificate that asserts that
the holder has the knowledge and skills needed
to use the most common computer applications efficiently
and productively in the workplace and at home.

Society, the independent scientific, not-for-profit

How to Get the
ECDL?
To gain the ECDL - EUROPEAN COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE
- the candidate must pass one theoretical and
six practical tests, which are administered throughout
Europe by authorised Test Centres. Tests are based
on the - EUROPEAN COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE Syllabus.
How and When it
Started?
The ECDL - EUROPEAN COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE -
concept was developed as part of the work of the
User Skills Task Force set up by CEPIS - Council
of European Professional Informatics Societies
and its member societies. The whole work was completed
with EU Funding within the Leonardo and ESPRIT
Projects.
The ECDL Foundation
The ECDL - EUROPEAN COMPUTER DRIVING LICENCE -
concept is owned and managed by the EUROPEAN COMPUTER
DRIVING LICENCE Foundation which is supported
by the EU Commission.
Headquartered in Dublin, the EUROPEAN COMPUTER
DRIVING LICENCE Foundation, was established in
January 1997 by CEPIS - Council of European Professional
Informatics Societies as a not-for-profit company
limited by guarantee to support and co-ordinate
the work of the ECDL Organizations in each member
country.
The ECDL Foundation works to promote a pan-European
and an international certificate of industry-standard
computing skills. The ECDL - EUROPEAN COMPUTER
DRIVING LICENCE - is open to everyone; from large
multinational organizations and government bodies
to the individual computer user irrespective of
colour, social status, racial origin or sex.
The ECDL has already been adopted by all EU and
Scandinavian countries, many eastern European
countries, countries of the African continent
Canada and Australia. It has also been introduced
in the United States of America.
The ECDL has become the de-facto and only independent
international certificate of end-user IT Skills.
The ECDL is awarded when the Candidate passes
in the seven (7) ECDL Module Tests that are the
following:
1. Concepts of Information Technology
2. Using the Computer and Managing Files
3. Word Processing
4. Spreadsheets
5. Database
6. Presentation
7. Information & Communication
The Tests are based on the ECDL
Syllabus that the Candidate can download and
review. Module Test 1 is theoretical while all
other 6 Module Tests (2-7) are practical. All
tests last 45 minutes.
The passing mark for all ECDL Tests is 75%.
