   The International Dimension

The GCS is global in outlook. As EU nationals, our students and Staff are given the opportunity to participate in programmes such as Comenius – Life Long Learning , developed and funded by the European Commission. Funds to support student and Staff mobility among Schools within the European Union are used in a number of constructive ways. The GCS has taken this opportunity to network with colleagues overseas, organizing visits abroad to enrich our students' experiences and their sense of being EU Citizens. For instance, our School hosts students and teachers from a number of European countries, who are engaged in several activities with students and Staff of our School. Multicultural teams work effectively enhancing the sense of belonging to a European community as well as the exchange of ideas among partners from several countries. Teacher exchanges are also common, where teachers from our school are given the opportunity to teach and observe classes in schools abroad. They thus enrich their experience by encountering different education systems, teaching methodologies and cultures. The same applies to teachers from abroad who visit our School for specific academic periods. What is more, a significant number of our students attend conferences and forums abroad. These programmes focus on specialised subjects, such as Science, and cultivate a number of skills such as leadership, learner autonomy, and team-play. A representative example is the London International Youth Science Forum which is attended by students of exceptional calibre from 60 countries. In addition, some of our students receive scholarships from a number of organisations and embassies. Opportunities are given to students to attend summer courses and participate in competitions, and financial prizes are occasionally awarded. Selection is often determined by participation of candidates in challenging school competitions which test a number of skills through written exams, general knowledge quizzes, interviews, debates, project work and extra-curricular activities. All international programmes aim at enhancing intercultural awareness among students and teachers, in both social and academic spheres.
