Earth From Above - Touches down at the GC School
Sylvie Hartman, Managing Director of Hathor Art Productions and the lady responsible for setting up the wildly successful Earth from Above exhibition that took Nicosia by storm, visited our school on Thursday 20 th October. She was greeted at the reception by two of our budding reporters Marie-Nicole Papadopoulou, Ellen-Maria Vafeades (3 Blue) and Mrs Strengell and was introduced to the Principal and various members of Staff. The introductions over, Mrs Hartman presented a video showing of how the pictures for the exhibition had been taken. She also gave us a lecture on The Environment and Sustainable Development, two core issues of the Geography and Economics syllabuses. After Question-time, members of the Photographic Society took snaps of the occasion and everyone involved. The reporters set up an interview with Mrs Hartman at a future date when they will be able to present even more interesting information for us.
Mrs Hartman’s fascinating presentation left us thinking how beautiful our planet really is but also how serious the problems facing us today really are. The message at the end of the day was that WE ALL HAVE TO LEARN TO SHARE – this is the only way for our long-term survival. The photographer himself, Mr. Yann Arthus-Bertrand, is showing us the way since he intends to sell the exhibition, something that took him 14 years to compile, and all proceeds will go to the earthquake victims in Pakistan! We do not need a better example than that. So get out there and start sharing, today.
A copy of the catalogue of all the pictures displayed in the exhibition will be available at the Library for all to enjoy.
