Our GCS graduate and former Head of Biology, Irini Hadjisavva, PhD., has co-authored a book called A Step-by-Step Guide to Stop Bloating & Heal Your Gut. Irini is a Molecular and Cellular Biologist who is passionate about the human microbiome, gut health and healthy living.
Studies show that up to 20% of people in the world suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and bloating. The book, a first of its kind in Cyprus and Greece, aims to tackle bloating and serve as your trusted and easy-to-use guide for all things related to gut health. This guide starts by walking you through the various gastrointestinal (GI) conditions that are linked to bloating and other GI symptoms, pointing out alarm symptoms and helping you effectively convey them to your physician.
Furthermore, the book explains the function of the gut microbiome and its effect on your health, especially when the microbiome is disturbed. It touches on important topics such as probiotics, the use of exercise, meditation and mindfulness to tame abdominal symptoms, consumption of fermented foods and the importance of fiber intake for a healthy gut and overall wellbeing.
The book includes a popular meal plan, menu ideas and 101 healthy, gut-friendly, Mediterranean-influenced recipes. These recipes are gluten-free and are based on the low FODMAP diet, a specific dietary plan that has scientifically shown to have a positive impact on IBS.
The book is currently available in bookstores in Cyprus and Greece. In Cyprus, you can find it at Public, Soloneion Book Center, Agrotis Book & Stationery, Kyriakou Bookshops and Parga Book Center.
